Rose Schreiber (b. 1988) is a visual artist from Chicago, IL. Currently, she is Visiting Professor in Ceramics at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. Through her artwork and research, Rose focuses on the intersection of ecological thought and ceramic art and materials – exploring issues of land, power, extraction, the planetary imaginary, and geologic poetics.
Reverse Cleaving

"Much of my work over the past few years has dealt with the political, economic, and ecological themes that underpin contemporary ceramics practice. Through clay, I am deeply invested in probing American land history, the planetary imaginary, and the poetry of geologic, industrial materials.
The works in Reverse Cleaving were made by coating roots, branches, rope netting, and other organic materials with a ceramic paste. Through firing, the organic matter was burned away, and only the ceramic contours of these forms remained. These pieces were fired in giant beds of sand and are fused together with melted glass. This work, for me, was a way of exploring ideas of environmental ghostliness, as well as enmeshed networks and material agency."
As an historical architect, I’ve focused on transforming and adapting historic structures for their next phase of life while retaining their character and meaning. I’m particularly interested in the relationship between old and new, historic, and modern. My approach to art follows a complementary path.
