Eight days before Christmas, the Ingalls (Pa, Ma, Mary and Laura) have invited some folks to dinner to celebrate completion of their new home. The guests include Laura's nemesis, the stuck-up Nellie Oleson and her mother Mrs. Oleson; the rambunctious mountain man Edwards); two of the Ingalls girls' cousins, Nick and Peter; and Pa's younger brother George, who ran away at 14 to join the Army as a drummer boy in the Civil War. George is haunted by the memories. The gathering includes one of Pa's animated stories of his childhood and some do-si-do-ing as the group does some square dancing. However, a freakishly severe early winter thunderstorm brings the celebration to an end as the downpour causes the creek to rapidly rise and wash out the bridge just after the Ingalls' guests get across it. Although everyone is safe, the Ingalls family is now stranded. Not only can't Pa get to town for needed supplies, Mary and Laura fear the swollen creek will make it impossible for Santa Claus to get to them with their Christmas gifts. When the girls get depressed about the very non-merry Christmas circumstances, Ma steps in to deliver a lesson. "We're the only ones who can make it feel like Christmas," Ma says, inspiring Mary and Laura to make the best of the situation, which in the end turns out to be a truly memorable Christmas.
