Ben Miller is an artist living in Bozeman who is known for his development of “Fly Cast Painting”. Ben sets up a homemade easel on the banks of a river, upon which he places a sheet of transparent plexiglass. Using traditional fly fishing rods, he substitutes handmade “fly-brushes” for conventional hooked flies, saturates them in acrylic paint, and casts from over twenty feet on to the plexiglass. Over the course of a day, he casts over one thousand times, the mark of each cast eventually making up a finished painting of a chosen river.

Ben began fly fishing at the age of 8 while growing up in Washington State. He began to draw at an early age, and went to Washington State University where he graduated in 2001 with a BA in fine arts. He taught art in secondary education for 12 years before deciding to move to Bozeman to pursue a career as an artist and develop his new idea of Fly Cast Painting. While making a painting on the banks of the Gallatin River, he met the New York art dealer Gary Snyder who had had recently moved to Bozeman. Snyder was drawn to Miller’s paintings and chose to represent him. In describing Miller’s work, Snyder writes:
