Griffin Foster

Through years of careful exploration and documentation, Griffin Foster has generated a wide array of field sketches from around the state of Montana. From dilapidated shacks to the most cherished buildings, his desire to record their standing remains the same. Spending hours and even days at a given location transports him back to the time when these structures were still in use. The wonders of the old ways keep him moving through different mountains. Ghost towns, abandoned mining infrastructure, and historic cabins give insight into the ancient connection between humans and the land. In August 2023, Griffin spent two weeks in the backcountry cabin as an artist-in-residence with the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation. With not much more than his paint gear, he hiked over a hundred miles solo to record various outposts and basins. The December DBA Art Walks show at Hennebery Eddy Architects will feature framed drawings and oil paintings he created during his study; other images are a compilation of fieldwork completed over the past few years.
